Never heard maroon (colour or castaway) pronounced that way. Strikes me it also rhymes with roan, though that's probably coincidental.

The Spanish word for brown is marrn (the last syllable rhymes with "roan"). I've always thought there had to be a relation between marrn and maroon.

AHD says of maroon, "[from] French marron, chestnut, from Italian marrone." Like as not the Spanish word shares the same root.
